A Grand Slam On Opening Day

The 2019 Fairfield American Little League season officially kicked off with the annual Opening Day Celebration on Saturday, April 27!

Despite the less-than-ideal weather conditions, hundreds of players and their families celebrated the start of a new season at FALL's outdoor headquarters, Mill Hill Field. Board Members and co-hosts for the event, Keith Connors and Jay Tolisano, walked the delighted crowd through an hour-long program that featured introductions of every team in all 9 divisions, remarks from FALL President Neil Stekloff that highlighted a number of changes the league has made over the past few months to improve the experience for all of our players and families, and the unveiling of two new banners. The first banner honors the 2018 12 year old district team State Championship; the second one celebrates the Fairfield Challenger team, known as the Red Storm, which is celebrating its 30th season in 2019! Their manager, Brian Markham, helped to present the banner which lists the names of every player who has participated in the program since it began! And a special thanks to Fairfield First Selectman Mike Tetreau for celebrating with us!

The mascots from Fairfield University and Sacred Heart were on hand to excite the crowd - and whip the players into a frenzy with the T-Shirt toss! Look at the intensity these kids bring for a free t-shirt!

Other highlights from the day included:

  • Based on parent feedback provided over the past several seasons, Photo Day was held on Opening Day to make it easier for families, especially those with younger players. This is the first time we handled Photo Day this way and early feedback is all positive! Thanks to League Parent Volunteer, Jodi Moore, for her huge effort to make this happen!
  • Another first...The Fairfield Red Storm, our team that competes in the Little League Challenger Division, opened their season against Darien at Mill Hill after the ceremony. The players loved having the big crowd to cheer them on!
  • Special thanks to Mike Papale and the "In a Heartbeat Foundation" for donating an AED device to Fairfield American that will be placed at Riverfield ball fields.
The FALL Board of Directors would like to say "THANK YOU" to all of the players and families who braved the elements yesterday to be part of a very special Opening Day! You can see many more photos on our Facebook and Instagram pages!

Best wishes for a fun and successful 2019 season! See you at the fields!
